The Role of Chronic Exposure to Amoxicillin/Clavulanic Acid on the Developmental Enamel Defects in Mice

Abstract: Amoxicillin used in early childhood may be associated with enamel hypomineralization. Our aim was to assess disturbances of amelogenesis in mice lower incisors induced by chronic administration of amoxicillin/clavulanic acid (AMC). Twenty-eight C57BL/6 male mice, of similar age, randomly divided into a control and 3 treatment groups (n ¼ 7) received subcutaneous injection, once per day, for 60 days: 50, 100, and 150 mg/kg BW of AMC. Scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis in … Show more

“…There are some disadvantages when using these materials: doubtable adaptation to the cavity walls [1], voids formation in the bulk material [2] and difficulties when displacing the material from the syringe. In the complex environment of oral cavity, these materials are prone to degradation [3][4][5][6][7] and the tooth-material adhesion to breaking. Efforts were made in time in order to improve marginal adaptation of these composite resins, by controlling the polymerization shrinkage [8][9][10], by placing a flowable composite resin as an intermediate layer [11] or by reducing the viscosity of these highly filled composite using preheating [12][13][14][15].…”

“…An important role in cervical dentinal hypersensitivity is also periodontal therapy. Thus, through root planning, the root dental surface may suffer significant losses of minerals with the appearance of HD [10][11][12][13][14][15].…”

“…The enamel is the most mineralized tissue in mammals and it is composed in a proportion of over 97% by minerals, mostly in the form of calcium phosphates. Ca/P ratio in healthy enamel varies between 1.64 and 1.8, similar to that of apatite [17,18].…”
