The Role of Climatic and Bioclimatic Conditions in the Development of Health Tourism Product

Abstract: The aim of this paper is t o discuss the c o w e p t of health tourism product as a competitive tourism product with a focus on lkaria Island, Greece. The diversification of the health tourism product is explored and the study identifies key components for a successful development of a spa resort. The paper also examines the prospects for the thermalhineral springs of lkaria Island, taking account of the climatic and bioclimatic regimes of the area. The study concludes that there are prospects for future devel… Show more

“…The quantification and assessment of the extreme conditions have to be performed by an appropriate way and not only in terms of air temperature, which is only one of the parameters that influence human thermal comfort and health; the other parameters concern air humidity, wind speed and radiation fluxes (expressed with the mean radiant temperature) (VDI, 1998;McGregor et al, 2002;Zaninovic and Matzarakis, 2009;Didaskalou and Nastos, 2003;Didaskalou et al, 2009;Bleta et al, 2013;Nastos and Matzarakis, 2013). The results based on the frequency diagrams and CTIS approach give an addition for the public and official responsible from urban planning and tourism the possibility to be informed about the present and expected conditions in order to develop and apply mitigation and adaptation possibilities (Matzarakis and Endler, 2010;Bartels et al, 2009).…”

“…This kind of analysis could be exploited by stake holders and tourism industries in order to promote or develop mitigation and adaptation strategies due to the oncoming climate change. It is worth noting that CTIS, along with bioclimate diagrams, visualize in a user-friendly way the holistic influence of climate on human thermal comfort, taking into consideration not only air temperature but also humidity, wind speed, and radiation fluxes by means of mean radiant temperature [2,5,24,33,37,38].…”

“…Weather and climate are important factors for tourism decision-making [1][2][3][4]. As the environmental impact is very extensive, the attempt to promote off-peak tourism to traditional or other destinations represents one way of reducing the pressure on the environment [5]. On the other hand, an extension or a shift of the tourism period would be beneficial concerning the resilience and adaptation to global warming [6].…”

“…Tourism in Greece has been growing significantly in certain areas such as Rodos, Crete, Corfu and Myconos. As the environmental impact is very extensive, the attempt to promote off-peak tourism to these or other destinations represents one way of reducing the pressure on the environment (Didaskalou and Nastos, 2003). Besides, health tourism have defined climate as an important factor that satisfies the needs of visitors of a spa/health resort (Didaskalou et al, 2004).…”
