The role of conceptual change texts to improve students' understanding of alkenes

Abstract: This research aims to investigate the influence of conceptual change texts on students' understanding and misconceptions related to the subject of alkenes. For this, nine conceptual change texts were developed by considering students' misconceptions and learning difficulties regarding alkenes. The participants of this study consist of 63 second year students from the Primary Science Education Department. From the sample group, 33 students were placed in the experimental group and 30 in the control group. Befor… Show more

“…This situation shows that promoting conceptual change for some concepts is difficult [52,53]. This result is parallel of the literature [30]. Furthermore, unexpected results such as misconceptions labelled 10 that the control group appeared to perform better in the post-test were found.…”

“…When the effects of the conceptual change approach on conceptual change is compared with traditional instruction methods, it has been found in many studies that this approach has more positive impacts [e.g., 15,28,29,30]. Furthermore, several efforts, in the science education, have demonstrated alternative roles for technology in teaching and learning [e.g., [31][32][33].…”

“…For example, there were studies that examined the use of the Dual Situated Learning Model (DSLM) (see e.g., She, 2004), analogies, conceptual change oriented instruction (Özkaya, Üce, Hakan Sarıçayır, and Sahin, 2006), concept mapping (see e.g., Chiu & Lin, 2005), and conceptual change text (see e.g., Sendur & Toprak, 2013). “…The conceptual change text is a written discourse that identifies common misconceptions, explains the reasons for misconceptions, and then provides a scientifically acceptable concept (Sendur and Toprak, 2013). In contrast to traditional texts, conceptual change texts are specifically designed to discover students' misconceptions about topics and attempts to change them into scientific concepts (Cetingul and Geban, 2011).…”
