O objetivo da gestão de riscos é avaliar e monitorar o grau de incertezas de um projeto e, faz parte do seu escopo identificar, analisar, compreender, avaliar e tratar os riscos. A avaliação de riscos tem como um dos principais intuitos auxiliar o gestor do projeto na tomada de decisão, como por exemplo, na escolha das prioridades e do foco de controle em um determinado momento ou, na avaliação da probabilidade de se alcançar as metas planejadas. Além disso, de uma forma geral, as consequências do risco podem ser divididas em quatro grupos de problemas, que são relacionados a prazo, custo, qualidade e segurança. Este trabalho propõe a estruturação de uma avaliação de riscos de obras verticais por meio de um estudo de caso. Esta avaliação indicou o nível de risco de cada atividade do caminho crítico do cronograma com a geração de um Índice de Criticidade de Risco de Atraso (ICRA) e permitiu gerar a probabilidade global de término da obra, estimada por meio da Simulação de Monte Carlo utilizando o software @RISK Industrial. Os resultados da avaliação de risco permitiram inferências e recomendações para aprimorar o processo de gestão de riscos na empresa. As conclusões indicam a importância do caráter prático do modelo proposto, sugerindo que indicadores já levantados pela empresa sejam utilizados, sendo que os resultados podem ser atualizados conforme a retroalimentação do modelo durante a execução do projeto. O índice de criticidade de risco auxilia o gestor da obra a priorizar o controle das atividades com o maior risco de atraso e, as simulações contribuem para comunicar o resultado probabilístico dos riscos relacionados ao atraso de obras, permitindo tomadas de decisões mais eficazes.

PurposeRecently, there has been a shift toward the embodied energy assessment of buildings. However, the impact of material service life on the life-cycle embodied energy has received little attention. We aimed to address this knowledge gap, particularly in the context of the UAE and investigated the embodied energy associated with the use of concrete and other materials commonly used in residential buildings in the hot desert climate of the UAE.Design/methodology/approachUsing input–output based hybrid analysis, we quantified the life-cycle embodied energy of a villa in the UAE with over 50 years of building life using the average, minimum, and maximum material service life values. Mathematical calculations were performed using MS Excel, and a detailed bill of quantities with >170 building materials and components of the villa were used for investigation.FindingsFor the base case, the initial embodied energy was 57% (7390.5 GJ), whereas the recurrent embodied energy was 43% (5,690 GJ) of the life-cycle embodied energy based on average material service life values. The proportion of the recurrent embodied energy with minimum material service life values was increased to 68% of the life-cycle embodied energy, while it dropped to 15% with maximum material service life values.Originality/valueThe findings provide new data to guide building construction in the UAE and show that recurrent embodied energy contributes significantly to life-cycle energy demand. Further, the study of material service life variations provides deeper insights into future building material specifications and management considerations for building maintenance.

Global environmental problems such as climate change, natural disasters, energy consumption, and biodiversity are among the main concerns of the countries. Approximately 50% of the energy consumed worldwide is spent on architectural constructions. The increase in energy consumption, especially in buildings, has brought energy efficiency and reduction of carbon footprint to the fore. There are many factors in determining energy consumption in buildings such as physical environment, climate, orientation, shell, and material properties. Energy consumption can be increased in order to provide indoor climatic comfort in winter and summer periods. This study aimed to investigate the energy consumption and comfort conditions of a boutique hotel in Abdera, Greece. ArchiCAD, Graphisoft, EcoDesigner software were used in the analysis of findings, and suggestions were put forward. We suggest that the effective use of natural resources in terms of individual, urban, social, and global perspectives will be positively influenced by the reduction of energy consumption without compromising comfort conditions in accommodation buildings.
