The Role of Core Needle Biopsy for Thyroid Nodules with Initially Indeterminate Results on Previous Fine-Needle Aspiration: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract: Core needle biopsy has low nondiagnostic result rates and high specificity for the diagnosis of malignancy. It is a safe diagnostic technique with a higher diagnostic yield, especially when molecular testing is not available or fine-needle aspiration did not yield enough cells for molecular testing.

“…Facing thyroid nodules with indeterminate cytological results, other options can be valuable to increase diagnostic accuracy: repeated FNAC, iodine 123 scintigraphy, core needle biopsy, immunocytochemistry, molecular testing (22,23). In Ratour et al study, no benign immunocytochemistry results were associated with a malignant lesion (24).…”

“…Additionally, in that article, the results of CNB were grouped into the six categories of the Bethesda system, whereas we only considered malignant and benign outcomes. However, the high accuracy of CNB was demonstrated in both papers, and, notably, very low rates of inconclusive results and complications from CNB were reported by Suh et al [ 38 ].…”

“…A relevant meta-analysis of the reliability of CNB in indeterminate thyroid nodules was published by Suh et al [ 38 ]. Herein, we adopted a different search algorithm, so our results are not perfectly comparable to those obtained by Suh et al [ 38 ].…”
