Background: In addition to morbidity and mortality, the COVID-19 pandemic affected various fields such as medical and academic education. The purpose of this study was to investigate the types of social media used in medical and academic education and identify their advantages and disadvantages. Methods: A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science was conducted to identify published studies related to the effects of social media on medical and academic education during the COVID-19 pandemic. The retrieved records were screened in a two-step process; first by title/abstract and then by full text by two independent researchers and the most relevant studies were selected applying the eligibility criteria. Results: Facebook, YouTube, Zoom, WhatsApp, Moodle, and Skype were the most used platforms. The main purpose of using these applications was to provide distance education to students in the pandemic era. The advantages of using online platforms outweighed the disadvantages. Advantages include the availability of information at any time and place, maintaining communication between students and classmates and instructors, and the possibility of presenting conferences and assignments. Disadvantages comprised infrastructure and internet problems. Conclusion: Social media and messengers have a great potential to meet educational purposes in the epidemic era. Although online platforms can serve as an efficient public repository of learning resources, achieving this needs some prerequisite and infrastructural tasks.

Background Social media causes increased use and problems due to their attractions. Hence, it can affect mental health, especially in students. The present study was conducted with the aim of determining the relationship between the use of social media and the mental health of students. Materials and methods The current cross-sectional study was conducted in 2021 on 781 university students in Lorestan province, who were selected by the Convenience Sampling method. The data was collected using a questionnaire on demographic characteristics, social media, problematic use of social media, and mental health (DASS-21). Data were analyzed in SPSS-26 software. Results Shows that marital status, major, and household income are significantly associated with lower DASS21 scores (a lower DASS21 score means better mental health status). Also, problematic use of social media (β = 3.54, 95% CI: (3.23, 3.85)) was significantly associated with higher mental health scores (a higher DASS21 score means worse mental health status). Income and social media use (β = 1.02, 95% CI: 0.78, 1.25) were significantly associated with higher DASS21 scores (a higher DASS21 score means worse mental health status). Major was significantly associated with lower DASS21 scores (a lower DASS21 score means better mental health status). Conclusion This study indicated that social media had a direct relationship with mental health. Despite the large amount of evidence suggesting that social media harms mental health, more research is still necessary to determine the cause and how social media can be used without harmful effects.

The aim of the present study is to investigate the role of motivational factors and personal characteristics on sharing of unconfirmed information by mediating social media fatigue in the time of COVID 19. This study is an applied study in terms of purpose and is a type of descriptive-correlational studies in terms of data collection method. Statistical population of the study consisted of all students at Semnan University in the academic year 2020-2021 that 230 people were selected as sample by stratified random sampling method. Study instrument included personal characteristics, motivational factors, social media fatigue and sharing of unconfirmed information questionnaires. Reliability of questionnaires using Cronbach's alpha, was respectively (0.91); (0.87); (0.70); (0.81). The results showed that Exploration, religiosity and poor self-regulation have no significant effect on sharing of unconfirmed information. Usage of social networks for entertainment and selfpromotion has a significant impact on sharing of unconfirmed information and social media fatigue. Social media fatigue has a significant impact on sharing of unconfirmed information. Exploration, religiosity, poor self-regulation, entertainment, self-promotion have an indirect effect on sharing of unconfirmed information of social networks through mediation of social media fatigue. The results indicate the importance of the role of motivational factors in social media fatigue and consequently sharing of unconfirmed information of social networks.
