The Role of Delayed Hypersensitivity in Immunological Processes and Its Relationship to Aphthous Stomatitis

Abstract: THE PHENOMENON of delayed hypersensitivity (DH) has recently become more amenable to investigation because of the development of several new techniques with which it can be studied. DH is typified by the tuberculin reaction. Its chief hallmarks consist of the delayed appearance of a mononuclear inflammatory reaction, passive transfer of the reaction by lymphoid cells and inability to passively transfer DH with serum. These characteristics of the DH reactions are also similar to the cellular immune processes… Show more

“…Since the study by Barile et al (2) additional studies have supported a possible relationship between S. sanguinis 2A and this condition (2830). However, conflicting results have been reported (31, 32) and a direct association has therefore not been confirmed. H. pylori has been found in RAS ulcers and implicated in the aetiology (7, 33).…”

“…Its chief hallmark consists of (1) the delayed appearance of a mononuclear inflammatory reaction and (2) passive transfer of the delayed hypersensitivity via transfer of cells of the sensitized subject to unsensitized subjects but an inability to passively transfer delayed hypersensitivity with serum. 2 Lymphocytes in tissue culture can be seen to wander incessantly and presumably identify the antigens of the cells over which they move in terms of their degree of "fit" with the antibody on the lymphocyte surface. Likewise, in the body, the T-lymphocytes which form the majority of the circulating small lymphocytic pool mi grate through the tissue with a surveillance function.…”
