The Role of Echocardiogram and Cardiac Rhythm Analysis for Early Detection of Cardiac Amyloidosis

Abstract: Purpose: The purpose of this integrative review was to establish the role of cardiac rhythm analysis (electrocardiogram; EKG) and echocardiogram in increasing clinical suspicion for and earlier diagnosis of cardiac amyloidosis. Methods: A literature review was conducted using PubMed and Scopus databases. Dates searched were from January 2017 to May 2021. Inclusion criteria included a diagnosis of cardiac amyloidosis, use of EKG, and echocardiogram participants 18 years and older. Articles were excluded if they… Show more

“…ECG and echocardiography are primary diagnostic tools which can practically set the initial suspicions of cardiac amyloidosis[ 23 ]. Specifically, increased LV wall thickness with low-voltage QRS[ 24 ], the lack of progression of the R wave in the anterior precordial leads[ 25 ], left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) morphology[ 26 ], and conduction defects including atrioventricular (AV) or bundle branch block and conduction delay[ 27 ] seem to be the most characteristic findings in the ECG so far.…”
