The role of EMMPRIN expression in ovarian epithelial carcinomas

Abstract: Purpose: Extracellular matrix metalloproteinase inducer (EMMPRIN) was reported to involve in the invasion and metastasis of malignancies by regulating the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in stromal and cancer cells. The study aimed to clarify the role of EMMPRIN expression in tumorigenesis and progression of ovarian epithelial carcinomas. Methods: EMMPRIN siRNA were transfected into ovarian carcinoma cells with the phenotypes and their related molec… Show more

“…Previous studies show that the treatment with baicalein decreases CD147 expression in SMMC‐7721 cells, accompanied by the occurrence of apoptosis and autophagy (Zhang et al, ). In ovarian epithelial carcinomas, CD147 small interfering RNA treatment induces apoptosis via downregulating anti‐apoptotic protein surviving (Zhao et al, ). In CHO‐CD147 cells, CD147 is found to inhibit apoptosis under methotrexate treatment (Zhao et al, ).…”

“…Grass et al (2013) determine that CD147 can activate EGFR-Ras-ERK signaling pathway, and the activation of Ras gene induces cell proliferation (Malumbres and Barbacid, 2003). In ovarian cancer, as a partner of monocarboxylate transporter 1, CD147 mediates cell proliferation by promoting VEGF and MMPs (Zhao et al, 2013a). Cyclin D1 is an important cyclin, which has been found to be overexpressed in proliferating cells.…”

“…The role of CD147 in tumorigenesis is related to the inducement of MMP expression. It stimulates the secretion of MMPs from fibroblasts to degrade the basement membrane and the ECM, to facilitate cancer cell penetration, migration, metastasis, and angiogenesis (Weidle et al, 2010;Chen et al, 2012;Zhao et al, 2013). The degradation of the ECM and the cell adhesion contacts, and the formation of blood vessels, are the main events during metastasis that are initiated with CD147.…”
