The role of environmental issues in the adoption processes of European Union macro-regional strategies

Abstract: European macro-regional strategies (MRSs) are established around physical features such as seas, mountain ranges and river basins. They focus on a new type of policy-making area (the 'macro-regions') while seeking to design and implement innovative governance approaches. They are therefore considered innovative both in their geographical focus (in the context of EU policies) and in their approach to policy design, adoption and implementation. The present article argues that the analysis of this development can… Show more

“…This paper is built on the limitations and gaps of these studies by considering the cumulative renewable technologies (solar, hydro, biofuel, wind and hydrogen) and further leading to categorizing the drivers of renewable adoption in India. This paper focuses on the impact of three groups of possible drivers: "sociodemographic and housing factors" (Gløersen et al, 2019), "environmental concerns" (Welsch and K€ uhling, 2010), and "personality qualities" (Yang et al, 2018). To the best of our knowledge, no effort has been made to combine all the possible drivers into a single framework to empirically examine the importance of each element in relation to the others.…”

“…In the current EU austerity era, a sustainable approach to environmental planning is motivated by the depletion of natural resources, the lack of regional funding (Martinez-Garcia and Morales, 2019), and existing socioeconomic imbalances in Ukraine and other European countries (Gløersen et al, 2019). These three motivational indicators have caused significant national and international shifts toward centralisation in public policies regarding environmental planning.…”

“…Contemporary research indicates that regional resource availability and flexibility in environmental planning are the most important factors for sustainable development (Gløersen et al, 2019 (2014) and Faezy and Shadloo (2016), we prioritise regional funding policies to provide an innovative solution to environmental and socioeconomic obstacles. Similar to Tiwari (2006), we take a completely different approach to regionalisation policies by integrating environmental development with the funding of socioeconomic schemes.…”
