The Role of Estrogen Receptor β (ERβ) in the Establishment of Hierarchical Social Relationships in Male Mice

Abstract: Acquisition of social dominance is important for social species including mice, for preferential access to foods and mates. Male mice establish social rank through agonistic behaviors, which are regulated by gonadal steroid hormone, testosterone, as its original form and aromatized form. It is well known that estrogen receptors (ERs), particularly ER α (ERα), mediate effects of aromatized testosterone, i.e., 17β-estradiol, but precise role played by ER β (ERβ) is still unclear. In the present study, we investi… Show more

“…Nevertheless, studies about elevated plus maze demonstrated that the rodent sight is horizontal and transparency did not affect animal activity, which support our present studies [30]. In addition, estrogen is a very potential factor that may affect the female behavior [31]. However, in the present study, behavioral tests in open field, elevated plus maze, and the elevated platform were completed in a day, and we mainly focus the behavioral difference between the different In summary, we developed a novel simple method with higher sensitivity for assessing rodent innate fear using REP.…”

“…The tube test is a well-established paradigm to investigate social hierarchies in group-housed mice and has furthermore been used to study mental diseases or genotypes ( Lindzey et al, 1961 ; Yang et al, 2015 ). Although both, male and female animals, form social hierarchies in groups, males have been preferred in experiments across the literature ( Yang et al, 2015 ; McNamara et al, 2018 ; Nakata et al, 2018 ). We used male and female C57BL/6JOlaHsd mice at the age of 10–12 weeks, housed in groups of four.…”

“…ERβ regulates several biological activities such as regulation of male sexual behavior 15 , association and structural upkeep of the colon 16 , mediate estrogens stimulatory effects on proliferation of granulosa cell 17 , energy and glucose homeostasis 18 , brain development 19 , hierarchical social relationships 20 , formation of multiple oocytes follicles (MOFs) 21 , regulation of placental function and social learning-related food preference during human and animal pregnancy [22][23] . ERβ is also involved in pathological conditions such as muscle injuries, sarcopenia, and cachectic disease 24 , delay in the onset of schizophrenia 25 , global ischemia [26][27] , dental caries 28 , cancer 29 , Alzheimer's disease [30][31][32][33] , Parkinson's disease [32][33][34][35] , trauma 32 , acute bacterial meningitis 36 , Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy (LHON) 37 , endometriosis 38 , inflammatory bowel syndrome (IBS) 39 .…”
