Abstract:The coherence of vowels as auditory objects was studied by comparing identification thresholds in noise for synthetic vowel sounds (differing only in the center frequency of a single formant) to identification thresholds for the distinctive formant presented in isolation. The bandwidth of the noise masker was limited so that it only interfered with perception of the distinctive formant. Thresholds for accurately identifying the vowel sounds were lower than those for identifying the isolated formant. This demon… Show more
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
