The role of Gelam honey in accelerating reepithelialization of ex vivo corneal abrasion model

Abstract: This study aimed to investigate the role of Gelam honey (GH) in accelerating reepithelialization of corneal abrasion. Corneal epithelial cells (CEC) isolated from New Zealand white rabbit corneas, were cultured and circular-shaped wounds were created onto them, representing the corneal abrasion model. These wounds were treated with basal (BM) and cornea media (CM) supplemented with GH. The percentage of wound closure was measured on day 0, 3, and 5. Expressions of cytokeratin 3 (CK3), cluster of differentiatio… Show more

“…Furthermore, all the nutritious components present in honey (sugars, amino acids, vitamins, and other trace elements) stimulate cell growth and the development of repair tissues [70][71][72]79,80]. In addition, re-epithelialization would also be promoted by the incre-ment of TNF-α and interleukin-1β (IL-1β) levels.…”

“…RJ has been used in conventional ophthalmic remedies like honey eye drops for corneal wound healing ( Azmi et al, 2021 ) and propolis for protecting retinal neurons ( Abd Rashid et al, 2022 ). Studies have demonstrated that RJ enhances tear secretion by promoting Ca 2+ mobilization and conserving ATP in lacrimal glands through muscarinic signaling pathways ( Inoue et al, 2017 ).…”

“…Apart from its high sugar content, GH contains a substantial amount of vitamins C, B1, and B3; flavonoids; and many other components [159]. In comparison to AH, as low as 0.0015% of GH concentration has been reported to enhance the proliferation of corneal keratocytes and CECs while retaining their phenotypical expression [160,161].…”
