The role of Helicobacter pylori in primary gastric MALT lymphoma

Abstract: We confirmed the relationship between H. pylori infection and a subset of gastric MALT lymphoma. Our results also showed that not all low- and high-grade gastric MALT lymphomas are H. pylori-dependent. This suggests that H. pylori infection may play a promoter role in the development of MALT lymphoma, but its presence is not mandatory for the progression of the lymphoma in view of its low frequency in advanced high-grade MALT lymphoma.

“…[134][135][136][137] Gastric MALT is specifically acquired most commonly in response to infection of the gastric mucosa by H pylori. The lymphocytes within this MALT are therefore programmed to respond to this microorganism, and the neoplastic cells of the lymphoma that may develop within this acquired MALT retain the ability to respond to the immunological proliferative drive associated with the continued presence of the microorganism.…”

“…Gastric infection by HP is actually considered to be the most relevant cause of chronic gastritis and peptic ulcer (5). It is also associated with an increased risk of mucosa associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma and gastric cancer (6). In the past years an association between HP and various extraintestinal pathologies such as coronary heart disease and Raynaud phenomenon have been described (7)(8)(9)(10).…”

“…It is also associated with an increased risk of MALT-lymphoma and gastric cancer [7,8]. Since spontaneous clearance of the bacterium is extremely rare, at least in the absence of specific antibiotic treatment, the infection lasts for a long time.…”
