As education is increasingly going online, propelled by the COVID-19 outbreak, how to build student engagement has become critically important, and it is, therefore, necessary to explore the motivators and barriers to student engagement comprehensively. Given the nature of an online learning environment, this study specifically focused on security and privacy concerns as the major issues that may be restricting student engagement. Based on the data collected from 296 students studying at Y University, South Korea, this study reported the results of the structural model test supporting that perceived usefulness and peer behavior directly influence real-time online class participation intention. This study further showed the negative impact of privacy concern and security concern on the perceived ease of participation, which consequently influences RTOC participation intention through perceived usefulness and peer behavior. As technology-enabled contactless activities, including online education, have become new normal, this study's approach will provide insightful implications that help encourage student participation and active learning.

How is Satisfaction with Online-to-Offline App Formed? Importance of Confirmation Through Offline Experience

Online-to-offline mobile applications (O2O apps), which attract potential customers online and entice them to purchase in physical stores, are growing in popularity. However, little is known about the mechanisms by which satisfaction with O2O apps is formed through offline experiences. Drawing on the expectation confirmation model (ECM), this study proposes that the confirmation of expectations through offline experiences is the key to explaining satisfaction with O2O apps. Response data from 271 consumers of Kakao Hair, an O2O application that is widely used for hair shop customers in South Korea, were collected and analyzed. The analysis found that the confirmation of expectations through offline experiences directly influences O2O app satisfaction, and indirectly influences O2O app satisfaction through trust in and the perceived usefulness of O2O applications. This study contributes to both ECM literature and mobile application literature by demonstrating how confirmation of expectations through offline experiences affect O2O app satisfaction and intention to continue using O2O apps.

Quality of smart-work support service, perceived value and intention to continue smart-work: empirical evidence from Korea

PurposeSmart-work has been attracting more attention since the COVID-19 outbreak hit the world in 2020. Smart-working practices do not always run smoothly despite the necessary infrastructure being in place. Taking the quality-value-loyalty chain and information system continuance model as the basis, this study aims to identify how “smart-work support service” leads to employees’ continuance intention toward smart-work. In this study, the smart-work support service refers to the infrastructure making smart-work possible and services needed to support smart-work.Design/methodology/approachUsing data collected from a survey of 406 employees working in Korea, this study verifies the components of smart-work support service quality and dimensions of perceived value through partial least squares analysis and then tests the proposed conceptual model using structural equation modeling.FindingsThe results verified that the quality of smart-work support service consists of eight attributes while dividing the perceived value of smart-work into three dimensions and further revealed that the service quality influences the intention to continue smart-working by way of perceived value and satisfaction.Originality/valueThis study sought to explore the relationship among service quality, perceived value and satisfaction by clearly conceptualizing and measuring them in the context of smart-work, thereby ultimately understanding the impact they have on the intention to continue smart-work.
