The role of identity instability in the relationship between narcissism and emotional empathy.

Abstract: Empirical literature has shown that narcissism is often associated with limited empathy, but the mechanism underlying this association is still unclear. The present study investigated the role of identity instability as a mediator of the relationship between narcissistic traits and empathic capabilities. Narcissistic traits, identity instability, and cognitive and emotional empathic capabilities were assessed among 462 nonclinical participants through self-report measures. “…As we have seen, narcissists are adept at manipulating their own profile and posts to fulfil their goals of selfaggrandisement and validation. But, they usually demonstrate lower levels of empathy towards others (Di Pierro, Di Sarno, Preti, Di Mattei, & Madeddu, 2018;Watson & Morris, 1991) which could manifest in disinterest in others' profiles. Viewing posts by others on Facebook does not help a narcissist fulfil any goals, and high levels of narcissism usually correspond with failure to engage with the more sociable, outward-facing components of Facebook (Horton, Reid, Barber, Miracle, & Green, 2014;Wang, Jackson, Zhang, & Su, 2012).…”

“…Te same aspekty towarzyszą refleksyjności w przypadku stosowania strategii radzenia sobie: bardzo pomocna jest umiejętność wglądu we własne poczynania. Empatia pomaga w rozumieniu i określaniu stanów mentalnych nie tylko innych ludzi [34], ale i własnych. Niemniej do uzyskanych wyników badań należy odnosić się ostrożnie ze względu na niską wartość współczynnika korelacji.…”

“…Despite theoretical elaboration of the role of identity in narcissism, there is little empirical research on the association between narcissism and identity integration. However, available evidence suggests that narcissistic traits [ 41 , 44 ], and in particular narcissistic vulnerability [ 39 , 40 , 45 ], are associated with higher identity instability (i.e., a weak sense of the self). For example, Dashineau et al [ 39 ] found that narcissistic vulnerability was associated with all forms of dysfunction (e.g., well-being, self-control, and everyday life tasks), while grandiosity was associated with specific deficits in interpersonal functioning.…”
