The Role of Imaging in the Diagnosis of Recurrence of Primary Seminal Vesicle Adenocarcinoma

Abstract: Primary seminal vesicle (SV) adenocarcinoma is a rare tumor. A small amount of data about the role of imaging to detect tumor recurrence is available. We report the case of a 58-year-old patient with primary SV clear-cell well-differentiated adenocarcinoma. Clinical and instrumental examinations were negative for the 32 months after treatments when computed tomography scan, [18F]fluoro-D-glucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography and pelvic magnetic resonance imaging showed the appearance of a le… Show more

“…DRE, CT, and MRI are useful for diagnosis of adenocarcinoma of the SV. DRE commonly reveals a painless, palpable mass (~70 % of patients) [1,4,5]. While the serum PSA level is normal, CA125 is a useful diagnostic and therapeutic marker for adenocarcinoma of the SV, initially showing an elevated level but falling if the patient responds to treatment [2].…”

“…The effectiveness of chemotherapy for SV adenocarcinoma remains unclear and no established regimen exists. Various drug combinations (cisplatin and 5-FU, docetaxel and cisplatin, and Taxol with carboplatin) [1,4,5] have been used. In our case, 12 cycles of docetaxel reduced the size of the primary tumor and metastases, thus allowing for radical surgery.…”

“…Sollini et al . 8 reported a patient who had undergone a second needle biopsy to diagnose seminal vesicle adenocarcinoma at 1-year after the first negative biopsy result. Moreover, it was also observed in the present study that the accuracy of needle biopsy in the diagnosis of seminal vesicle tumors was only 66.7%.…”
