The Role of Imaging Techniques in Management of COVID-19 in China: From Diagnosis to Monitoring and Follow-Up

Abstract: In December 2019, an outbreak of coronavirus infection emerged in Wuhan, Hubei Province of China, which is now named Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). The outbreak spread rapidly within mainland China and globally. This paper reviews the different imaging modalities used in the diagnosis and treatment process of COVID-19, such as chest radiography, computerized tomography (CT) scan, ultrasound examination, and positron emission tomography (PET/CT) scan. A chest radiograph is not recommended as a first-line … Show more

“… 25 In addition, it can be used as a follow-up tool to monitor the disease evolution and evaluate the severity of COVID-19 patients. 26 In the present study, we focused on investigating the chest CT imaging characteristics of the COVID-19 pneumonia in three groups of Iranian patients according to the patients’ clinical outcomes. A total of 363 patients with COVID-19 including 194 non-critical cases, 65 critical patients and 104 death cases were enrolled in this study.…”

“…20 A chest radiograph is not recommended as a first-line diagnostic imaging modality for COVID-19 infection due to its lack of sensitivity, especially in the early stages of infection. 21 Commonest finding in chest x-ray is bilateral pneumonia. We took it as a criteria to start treatment regimen.…”
