The Role of Immediate Postoperative Systemic Corticosteroids When Utilizing a Steroid‐eluting Spacer Following Sinus Surgery

Abstract: Minimizing systemic corticosteroid use in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis may avoid adverse events. Results from this study suggest that postoperative systemic corticosteroids immediately following endoscopic sinus surgery may not provide improved outcomes when utilizing a steroid-eluting spacer.

“…1333 Eighteen subjects were enrolled in each group, which satisfied the authors' a priori power analysis calculation. They found no significant difference in endoscopic outcome or patient-based QoL outcome between the 2 groups, and concluded there was no additional benefit of systemic corticosteroids when a corticosteroid-eluting stent was used.…”

“…Six studies were prospective, double‐blind, placebo‐controlled, randomized control trials (RCT), whereas one was a prospective single cohort trial. Three studies were multicenter trials, whereas the remaining studies were either single center or unspecified . Although Dautremont et al randomized the use of immediate postoperative systemic corticosteroids, here we analyze the control data in which the efficacy of SEBIDs is evaluated through pre‐ and postoperative comparisons.…”

“…Four studies recruited patients listed for primary FESS, whereas the remaining articles included patients for either primary or revision FESS. Five articles recruited patients with bilateral CRS . Patients were commonly excluded if steroids were contraindicated or if patients had specified conditions such as a previous history of glaucoma or steroid‐dependent conditions.…”
