The role of intrasexual competition on the evolution of male-male courtship display: a systematic review

Abstract: Background Evidence of male-male courtship display is widespread across the animal kingdom. Yet, its function and evolutionary origin remain unclear. Here, we hypothesise that male-male courtship display evolved in response to selection pressure exerted by intrasexual competition during male-female courtship interactions. Intrasexual competition can be caused by bystander male pressure through eavesdropping and exploiting on displayer male’s courtship interactions with females. This bystander pressure can lead… Show more

“…Animals employ a multitude of tactics to increase their fitness during mating interactions, including direct intrasexual competition, mate choice, elaborate signals, and physical or chemical coercion (Buchinger & Li 2023; Davranoglue et al 2023; Edward & Chapman 2011; Órfão et al 2023; Rosvall 2011; Schaefer & Ruxton 2015; Shuker & Kvarnemo 2021). Of these myriad strategies, nuptial gifts are among the most unique in their almost altruistic appearance.…”

“…Intrasexual competition is a useful concept for understanding a number of organisms’ behavior regarding mating (e.g., male–male courtship displays, Órfão et al, 2023; variation in bird song, Langmore, 1998; competition over limited resources, Rosvall, 2011), including humans (e.g., M. L. Fisher, 2013).…”
