The role of liquid‐based cytology in the investigation of thyroid lesions

Abstract: The role of liquid-based cytology in the investigation of thyroid lesionsObjective: This study investigates the role of liquid-based cytology by ThinPrep Ò technique in the detection of thyroid lesions. Methods: In all, 252 specimens from 157 patients for pre-operative evaluation of thyroid nodules, prepared by the ThinPrep Ò , were examined. In all cases thyroidectomy followed the initial cytological evaluation. All cytological diagnoses were correlated to the histological ones. Results: According to our findi… Show more

“…[7][8][9][10] More recent studies, however, have supported comparable or better results with liquid-based cytology. [11][12][13] Most published articles discuss thyroid FNAC using the ThinPrep system. [7][8][9][10]12,13 The reported inadequate rates varied from 22% up to 41%.…”

“…The study was not blinded. We defined specimens as adequate by the presence of at least six groups of cells with a minimum number of well-visualised ten cells in each group [5,6]. Table 3 shows the rates of cytological characteristics in malignant and benign lesions in each TP-PAP slide according to criteria in references 3, 6 and 21.…”
