The role of lymph node cells in the inhibition of metastasis by subcutaneous injection of Lactobacillus casei in mice

Abstract: The role of lymph node cells in the inhibition of metastasis of B16-BL6, a highly metastatic variant of B16 melanoma, by Lactobacillus casei YIT9018 (LC 9018) in C57BL/6 mice was determined. Subcutaneous (s.c.) injection of LC 9018 into the left inguinal or the left axillary region inhibited both axillary lymph node and lung metastasis of B16-BL6 after surgical excision of the tumors resulting from inoculation into the left front footpad of the mice. There was, however, little inhibition of the metastasis when… Show more

“…It has been previously shown that intravenous, intraperitoneal and intrapleural injection of LcS into mice augmented the NK activity of spleen cells, peritoneal exudate cells and thoracic exudate cells, respectively 6 , 7 , 8 . It was unclear at the time whether oral administration of LcS to mice activated NK cells to become tumoricidal.…”

“…Activation of tumor immunity and activation of chemotherapy by lactic acid bacteria, which are nonpathogenic and indigenous, have been reported and used for the treatment of various cancers (Asano et al 1986;Matsuzaki et al 1988b;Kato et al 1988;Takagi et al 1999). Recent studies on the relationship between immune checkpoint inhibitor and intestinal bacterial flora have been attracting attention (Sivan et al 2015;Routy et al 2018;Gopalakrishnan et al 2018).…”

“…administration of LC 9018 to tumor-bearing mice has an effect not only on the inhibition of tumor growth but also on the prevention of lung metastases [14,15]. It has also been shown that the effects of LC 9018 are in part dependent on augmentation of natural killer activity, cytolytic activity or phagocytic activity of thoracic macrophages, resulting in prolongation of the survival of the tumor-bearing mice [16,17].…”

“…It has also been reported that intrapleural (i.pl.) administration of LC 9018 effectively inhibited the exudation of thoracic fluid by transplanted tumors and exhibited a survival-prolonging effect in mice [14,15].…”
