The Role of Manual Acupuncture and Morphine Administration on the Modulation of Capsaicin-Induced Edema in Rat Paw. A Blind Controlled Study

Abstract: Neurogenic inflammation, includes vasodilation, the increase of vasal permeability and edema due to the release of neuromediators from nerve endings. A modulation of the release of neurotransmitters, from nerve endings and neurogenic inflammation related phenomena, was observed with the administration of drugs or of neurotransmitters inhibiting the release of neuropeptides from capsaicin-sensible neurons, among which morphine and other endogenous agonist opioids seem to be effective. The aim of this study is t… Show more

“…Similar results have been reported before in studies where oedema was induced in experimental animals [8,12,14]. However, when considering these results, it must be noted that there also were more dogs with oedema in the treatment group three days after the surgery, even if this difference between groups was not significant.…”

“…Acupuncture relieves inflammation by different mechanisms [6-13]; increases blood circulation in the affected area, with subsequent increase of neuropeptides, cytokines and other vasoactive substances [1] as well as reduces oedema [8,12,14]. Acupuncture enhances wound healing accelerators such as fibroblast growth factors (FGF) and platelet-derived growth factors (PDGF) in experimental models [15,16].…”

“…Acupuncture could diminish capsaicin-induced oedema in the rat paw, indicating a prominent role for substance P and other neuropeptides. 68 In dogs, the concentrations of substance P were determined in the skin, muscle and subcutis of acupoints and control points, showing an increased release of substance P after acupuncture. 69 On the other hand, an observation in rabbit tooth pulp showed that, after an initial substance P release had already been evoked, electroacupuncture suppressed this release.…”

“…The anti-inflammatory effects of EPG were evaluated using the carrageenan-induced paw edema test in rats, according to the method of Ceccherelli et al (1996). Briefly, rats were injected subplantarly into the right hind paw with 50 µL of carrageenan suspension (1% in saline).…”
