The Role of Matrix Composition in the Mechanical Behavior of Bone

Abstract: In the synthesis of the organic matrix, tropocollagen experiences various post-translational modifications that facilitate a highly organized fibril of collagen I with a preferred orientation giving bone extensibility and several toughening mechanisms. Being a ceramic, mineral is brittle but increases the strength of bone as its content within the organic matrix increases. With time, hydroxyapatite-like crystals experience carbonate substitutions, the consequence of which remains to be understood. Water partic… Show more

“…The positive correlation between DXA z ‐score and the 8680 cm −1 peak indicates that water is associated with BMD. Water has been shown to play a major role in the interface of the mineral and organic components of the bone matrix, contributing to bone quality and resistance to fractures . For example, water detection using magnetic resonance imaging has been associated with fracture risk in a study with cadaveric arms .…”

“…Fifth, the free plate model used for cortical bone characteristics identification was parametrized in terms of Ct.Th and Ct.Po, assuming universal material properties of the tissue matrix. Fixed matrix properties did not take into account the inevitable interindividual variability of bone tissue properties . However, such a hypothesis has been found to yield reasonably accurate ex vivo identification of Ct.Th and Ct.Po of human radius and tibia specimens .…”

“…Fixed matrix properties did not take into account the inevitable interindividual variability of bone tissue properties. (74) However, such a hypothesis has been found to yield reasonably accurate ex vivo identification of Ct.Th and Ct.Po of human radius and tibia specimens. (40) This model simplification can be avoided using a model parametrized in terms of thickness and stiffness (ie., including four independent stiffness coefficients to account for the generally accepted transverse isotropy of cortical long bones measured axially).…”

“…2). These proteins were chosen due to their association with osteoblasts and bone matrix remodeling [39,[69][70][71][72], or osteoblasts and bone metastatic cancer [32,33,73]. We observed the largest differences between conditioned and vehicle-treated osteoblast protein expression in late (20 days) differentiated osteoblasts, which are shown in Fig.…”
