The role of medicine donations in the global programme for the elimination of lymphatic filariasis

Abstract: World Health Assembly Resolution 50.29, adopted in 1997, committed the World Health Organization (WHO) and its member states to eliminate lymphatic filariasis (LF) as a public health problem. In 2000, to support this ambitious goal and the health ministries in the >70 LF-endemic countries, the Global Programme to Eliminate Lymphatic Filariasis (GPELF) was created. The resulting WHO elimination strategy consists of two main components: to stop the spread of infection by interrupting transmission and to a… Show more

“…Malawi’s MDA programme included a combination of ivermectin (IVM: 200 μg/kg of body weight) and albendazole (ALB: 400 mg) to treat the entire at-risk population [ 11 , 12 ]. The drugs were donated by the Mectizan Donation Program (IVM) and GlaxoSmithKline (ALB) [ 19 ], and the logistics and transportation of these donated goods were managed by the LF Programme Manager and distributed from the Central Medical Stores in the capital city of Lilongwe, to the district-level headquarters, and onwards to all district health facilities.…”

“…Most of the financial support for MDA and MMDP implementation and operational research activities were from the Centre for Neglected Tropical Diseases (CNTD) at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) with a grant from the U.K. Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO; formerly Department for International Development, DFID) and support from GlaxoSmithKline (GSK). The two drugs used for MDA implementation were donated by the Mectizan Donation Programme (IVM) and by GSK (ALB) [ 19 ].…”

“…In Mozambique, lymphatic filariasis, schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminths are widely prevalent with various levels of co-endemicity requiring coordinated integrated MDA campaigns including the donated drugs ivermectin (for lymphatic filariasis), albendazole (for lymphatic filariasis and soil-transmitted helminths) and praziquantel (for schistosomiasis). Lymphatic filariasis is endemic in 114 (71%) districts, while schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminths endemicity extends to all 161 (100%) districts [ 4 , 8 ]. The endemicity status of onchocerciasis is still unknown in 135 (84%) districts while the rest are classified as non-endemic.…”
