The role of metacognition in promoting deep learning in MOOCs during COVID-19 pandemic

Abstract: In many nations affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the situation in higher education institutions has changed. During the pandemic, these institutions have introduced numerous e-solutions to continue the process of education. Besides, research has shown many benefits in the last years of MOOCs. Yet, to date there are few studies to explore some individual characteristics, such as learners’ metacognitive skills, that might have an impact on learning outcomes in MOOCs. Furthermore, promotion of deep learning is … Show more

“…The researchers compared the effectiveness of applied classifiers through their F -Measure value because it provides a single score that balances both the concerns of precision and recall in one number. F -Measure (1) is the harmonic mean between precision (2) and Recall (3) , as described below ( Elbyaly & Elfeky, 2022 ): Where: True Positive (TP): Positive instances, and classified as positive.…”

“…In many nations affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the situation in higher education institutions has changed ( Elbyaly & Elfeky, 2022 ). Therefore, students and teachers have been recommended to switch to online learning instead of face-to-face classes as usually occurs at various educational institutions ( Basilaia & Kvavadze, 2020 ).…”

“…They are of two basic models, i.e., basic skills and skills of integrative science processes. Basic skills model includes prediction, measurement, classification, and observation while integrative science processes model involves procedural definition, variables’ identification and control, research questions and hypotheses, procedures and experimentation, and lastly interpretation of results ( Elbyaly & Elfeky, 2022 ). Students’ empowerment in these integrated science process skills is very important because they help students easily look for new information, solve problems in different situations, and gain knowledge from practice ( Sermsirikarnjana, Kiddee & Pupat, 2017 ).…”

“…Today, it is significant to combine online education with traditional classrooms to enhance student learning. Experts like Elbyaly and Elfeky (2022); Widjaja & Aslan (2022) all recognize the growing importance of blended learning. In today's digital age, where the internet, computers, and smartphones dominate, technical tools, information, and communication technology are essential in educating our students effectively.…”
