The role of microglia in viral encephalitis: a review

Abstract: Viral encephalitis is still very prominent around the world, and traditional antiviral therapies still have shortcomings. Some patients cannot get effective relief or suffer from serious sequelae. At present, people are studying the role of the innate immune system in viral encephalitis. Microglia, as resident cells of the central nervous system (CNS), can respond quickly to various CNS injuries including trauma, ischemia, and infection and maintain the homeostasis of CNS, but this response is not always good;… Show more

“…We showed in this study that ZIKV infection caused the activation of microglia, as evidenced by the formation of amoeba-like shapes (Fig. 3B) [25]. We also found that IL-22 de ciency resulted in reduced microglia numbers as well as cell activation (Fig.…”

“…Microglia cells are considered to be brain residential macrophages that are responsible for the clearance of invading pathogens and damaged neuronal cells [25]. However hyperactivation of microglia induces chronic in ammation and neurodegeneration [26].…”

“…Microglia are resident macrophage-like cells in the brain that not only have surveillance and phagocytic activity, but also are important mediators in the neuron synaptic activity 19. Some findings revealed that microglia serve as important physiological functions in learning and memory by promoting learning-related synapse formation through brain-derived neurotrophic factor signaling 21. Microglia also contribute in the regulation of axonal and dendritic growth, promoting relocation and synapse formation, and modulating synaptic plasticity.…”

“…The herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) is responsible for more than half of viral encephalitides with clinical manifestations, including seizures, mental impairment, and acute fever (Chen et al, 2019). HSV-1-infected neuronal cells release nucleotides such as ATP that activate and recruit microglia.…”
