The role of miRNAs in the diagnosis of stable atherosclerosis of different arterial territories: A critical review

Abstract: Atherosclerotic disease is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Atherosclerosis may be present in different arterial territories and as a single- or multi-territorial disease. The different phenotypes of atherosclerosis are attributable only in part to acquired cardiovascular risk factors and genetic Mendelian inheritance. miRNAs, which regulate the gene expression at the post-transcriptional level, may also contribute to such heterogeneity. Numerous miRNAs participate in the pathophysiology of … Show more

“…Some miRNAs displayed opposite expression trends, like miR-126, which was upregulated in renal artery stenosis and downregulated in carotid and lower limb plaques [ 66 ]. Conversely, miR-221-3p/miR-30 downregulation and miR-21 upregulation were found in both carotid and lower limbs arteries, whereas miR-145 was downregulated in carotid and coronary arteries [ 67 ].…”

“…Since one miRNA can target and regulate hundreds of genes (mRNAs), miRNAs have also gained considerable attention as biomarkers or putative indicators of mechanistic pathways in disease states. Furthermore, differential plasma miRNA profiles have been described for many diseases, including fatty liver [89] and atherosclerosis [90,91]. Dysregulation or altered miRNA expression/function has been implicated in diabetes [92] and cardiovascular disease [93,94].…”
