The Role of Multidisciplinary Chemistry Informal Research Programs in Building Research Competencies and Attitudes

Abstract: This article is focused on the effectiveness of an innovative research-based learning model that employs chemistry-based research projects in developing high school students’ research competency and attitudes. The chemistry-based research projects were carried out as a part of an informal program, in real-world laboratories on 330 high school students from 2010 to 2020 integrating different branches of chemistry, including physical, organic, inorganic, electrochemistry, and biochemistry, in addition to other s… Show more

“…Studies by Nakanjako et al [59] supported this claim and emphasized the significant association of research competence to RP. Research competence is the set of demonstrable skills and characteristics that enable the research faculty to successfully carry out research works [60]. These skills involve a set of proficiencies in analysis and mastery of sophisticated IT tools, working in interdisciplinary environments, building research networks, developing language skills, forging corporate culture, learning management skills, and strengthening awareness of research relevance as well as assessing the impact of particular research initiatives on the environment [61,62].…”

“…Hence, hydrogel is a suitable carrier to deliver chemistry to middle school students. Introducing middle school students to hydrogel chemistry can be vital for sparking interest in this subject. , Additionally, the middle school chemistry curricula in China do not include organic or polymer chemistry, which indicates the necessity of delivering hydrogel chemistry to middle school students from another aspect.…”
