Background: Left ventricular function and volumes have major diagnostic and prognostic importance in patients with various cardiac diseases, such as ischemic heart disease which is a life-threatening heart disease condition characterized by systolic dysfunction and a decrease in cardiac output. According to left ventricular ejection fraction, the degree of ischemic heart disease was classified as mild, moderate, and severe. To determine cardiac function and hemodynamics, the echocardiography technique is used, which is a noninvasive diagnostic method. Patients and Methods: The study included 216 patients between 25 and 75 years old; 121 males and 95 females; 265 normal individuals (age range: 25 to 75 years old); 84 males and 181 females. Doppler echocardiography was used to assess left ventricular function. The measurements included left ventricular end-diastole diameter (LVIDd), left ventricular end-systole diameter (LVIDs), and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF%). Results show a significant correlation in the values of EDV, ESV and LVEF (all: p < 0.05). The change difference in left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was (61.88%), (47.57%), and (36.76%), respectively, for all degrees of ischemia. While the change difference in left ventricular end diastolic volume (LVEDV)between patients and control groups was (173.38%), (248.83%), and (289.82%), respectively. On the other hand, the change in left ventricular end systolic volume (LVESV) was (258.73%), (495.13%), and (569.72%), respectively, for all degree of ischemia. Conclusion: The findings suggest that diastolic dysfunction is more common in patients than in healthy people. This could be due to the adverse effects of ischemic heart disease on the cardiac muscle. These changes in left ventricular structure may include left ventricular hypertrophy, increase in stiffness, and reduction in compliance.

The Myocardial Performance Index (MPI), also known as the Tei Index, is a measure of the overall performance of the heart that takes into account both systolic and diastolic function. It is a non‐invasive echocardiographic index that provides information about the efficiency of the heart's pumping action. The MPI is a useful tool for evaluating cardiac function in various clinical conditions, such as heart failure, myocardial infarction, and cardiomyopathy. A higher MPI value indicates poorer cardiac function, while a lower MPI value indicates better cardiac function. This review will give a summary of the relevant MPI literature, provide a methodology and technical aspects, and make research recommendations.

Background and Aim: Pulmonary pulse transit time (pPTT) is a new marker of pulmonary hypertension (PH), which shows the time needed for the pulse wave to propagate from the right ventricular outflow tract to the left atrium (LA), but the relationship between pPTT and diastolic-LA function is almost unknown. In this study, we investigated the relationship between pPTT and LA-diastolic functions without PH. Materials and Methods: One hundred and fifty-six patients were included in this prospectively designed study. Comprehensive echocardiographic evaluation was performed and pPTT was recorded as the time from the beginning of the R-wave on the electrocardiogram to the peak of the S-wave in the pulmonary veins. Results: We found a statistically significant correlation between LA total stroke volume, passive stroke volume, LA max area, LA volume (LAV) max and LA volume index (LAVi) max, and pPTT (r = 0.263** P = 0.003, r = 0.240** P = 0.007, (r = 0.339** P < 0.001, r = 0.307** P < 0.001 r = 0.199*, P = 0.024, LA total stroke volume, passive stroke volume, LA max area, LAV max, LAVi max respectively). Heart rate (HRt) and LAVi were detected as independent predictors of pPTT (hazard ratio: −2.290 P < 0.001, 95% confidence interval (CI): −3.274–1.306, HR: 0.461, P = 0.028, 95% CI: 0.050–0.873, HRt and LAVi, respectively). Conclusion: LAVi and HRt also affected pPTT. The dominant effect of HRt on pPTT should be considered in future studies. Larger studies are needed to determine the change and clinical significance of pPTT in left heart disease.
