The Role of Natural Compounds and their Nanocarriers in the Treatment of CNS Inflammation

Abstract: Neuroinflammation, which is involved in various inflammatory cascades in nervous tissues, can result in persistent and chronic apoptotic neuronal cell death and programmed cell death, triggering various degenerative disorders of the central nervous system (CNS). The neuroprotective effects of natural compounds against neuroinflammation are mainly mediated by their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiapoptotic properties that specifically promote or inhibit various molecular signal transduction pathways. Ho… Show more

“…Prolonged microglial activation, and in particular of the M1 pro-inflammatory microglia, can contribute to neuroinflammatory responses ( 56 ) also through endothelial and BBB dysfunction ( 57 ). Moreover, the oxidative stress caused by reactive oxygen/nitrogen species and mitochondrial disarrangements play key roles in neuroinflammation ( 58 , 59 ). Pro-inflammatory cytokines and high nitric oxide (NO) levels produced by activated microglia may promote reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation ( 60 ).…”

“…The prominent role inflammation plays in various age-related diseases such as AD, PD, and central nervous system (CNS) injury ( Khadka et al, 2020 ). Glial cells and immune cells are associated with the instigation of neuroinflammation.…”

“…The delicate balance between nerve connections, spinal cord, and the control center, the brain, is easily perturbed by exogenous insults and endogenous degenerative conditions. Debilitating disorders of the central nervous system (CNS) include Alzheimer's disease (AD) [17] and variants of dementia such as Lewy body dementia (LBD), tumors such as neuroblastoma and glioblastoma [18], as well as dyskinesia-related conditions such as Parkinson's disease (PD), Huntington's disease (HD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) [19]. Alzheimer's disease is a type of neurodegenerative disease that is described by the formation of plaques with tangled neurofibers composed of amyloid and tau proteins.…”
