Paweł Adamowicz, the liberal mayor of Gdańsk, Poland, died on January 14, 2019, after being stabbed by a man who rushed onstage during a charity event. Four studies were carried out to analyze the predictors of willingness to engage in collective action in support of the progressive city policies he initiated. In Study 1 ( N = 214), collective angst was related to collective action intention. Identification with Gdańsk mediated this relation. In the next two studies, we tested the role of the perceived continuity of the in-group. The relationship between collective angst and willingness to support collective actions was mediated by perceived essentialist continuity of the group (Study 2, on snap election day, N = 121). Moreover, results confirmed that collective angst predicted strength of identification with Gdańsk. This identification was related to the perceived essentialist continuity of the group, which in turn was linked to willingness to engage in collective actions in support of progressive policies (Study 3, N = 98). In Study 4 ( N = 456), conducted within a few days before the presidential election in Poland, we replicated the model of mediation obtained in Study 3, and showed that contextualized collective angst also predicted collective action intentions.

background Contemporary adolescents, also known as Generation Z, are an important group of consumers due to the role they play in today's economy. The present study investigates the relationship between materialism and brand engagement in self-concept (BESC) and whether conspicuous consumption is a mediator of this relationship in early, middle, and late adolescence. participants and procedureThe participants were 581 students from Poland, aged 13 to 17 (M = 15 years, SD = 1.42); 51.6% of them were girls. Data were gathered using a demographic information form, the Youth Materialism Scale, the Conspicuous Consumption Scale, and a BESC Scale, completed during personal interviews. resultsThe study indicated an association of higher materialism and higher conspicuous consumption with a higher level of BESC, where conspicuous consumption acts as a mediator of the correlation between materialism and BESC. Age also moderates this mediation, i.e., the older the teenagers are, the weaker is the analyzed mediation effect. conclusionsThe research is part of an essential step in understanding the mechanism of BESC by testing a moderated mediation model in teenagers.

It is widely believed that parents play a role in the outcome of their children. However, there is a scarcity in the literature tackling the parent-child relationship with regard to activist behaviors in offspring. To address this deficit, the study surveyed Senior High School students (N = 300) from the Integrated School of a private Metro Manila university to measure their involvement in social activism (adolescent activism) and to identify its relationship with parental factors (parental activism, parental support, parental psychological control) while accounting for sex and academic strand. The top three (3) forms of activism that the students engaged in were social media activism, voluntary work in educational activities, and e-volunteerism. Results indicate that females and their parents engage in social activism more than males and their parents. A significant difference in adolescent activism was found between the academic strands F(2,297) = 3.15, p = .04), with HUMSS students scoring significantly higher than STEM students. After controlling for sex and strand, parental activism was found to be the most significant correlate of adolescent activism (R² = .37, F (4, 292) = 42.43, p = <.001), followed by parental psychological control (R² = .4, F(5, 292) = 38.38, p = <.001).
