The role of photoperiod on the expression of hypothalamic genes regulating appetite in Chevrier’s field mouse (Apodemus chevrieri)

Abstract: The hypothalamus and leptin play a key role in the regulation of food intake. The present study investigated the effects of 4 weeks of short-or long-photoperiod on serum leptin levels and food intake in relation to mRNA expression levels of neuropeptide Y, agouti-related protein, pro-opiomelanocortin, and cocaine-and amphetamine-regulated transcript in the hypothalamus of Chevrier's field mouse (Apodemus chevrieri). There was a significant difference in body fat mass, food intake and neuropeptide Y mRNA expres… Show more

“…orexigenic neuropeptides (neuropeptide Y: NPY, and agouti-related protein: AgRP). The balance between these four neuropeptides can inhibit food intake and stimulate energy expenditure: by stimulating NPY/AgRp-expression and suppression POMC/CART-expression, the food intake increased and energy expenditure decreased 39 , such as Apodemus chevrieri 40 and Eothenomys oliter 23 , and the mRNA levels appear in seasonal cycles, such as E. oliter , the NPY/AgRp mRNA level appear the peak and bottom at winter and summer, respectively, however, the POMC/CART mRNA level appear an opposite trand 23 .…”

“…We designed species-specific primers for these genes based on the cloned gene sequences of A. chevrieri. Species-specific primers were designed in real-time q-PCR for β-actin and the four hypothalamic genes are shown in Table 1 and verified effectively in A. chevrieri (Zhang et al, 2015). Standard curves were constructed for each gene using serial dilutions of cDNA (1 to 26-fold dilutions).…”
