The Role of Polyhedral Oligomeric Silsesquioxanes in Optical Applications

Abstract: The popularity of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxanes (POSS) for use in hybrid organic–inorganic materials and devices has grown in the past two decades due to desirable properties such as good thermal stability and biocompatibility, as well as their potential to be functionalized for a wide range of applications, from polymer composites to optoelectronics. Herein, the role of POSS for photonic applications, including sensing, bioimaging, and optoelectronic devices, is summarized. Functionalized POSS buildin… Show more

“…Cage-like and ladder-like silsesquioxanes have been of interest because the curing of these inorganic/organic hybrids yields materials that possess the hardness of the silica core and the flexibility and compatibility of the cross-linked organic functionalities that are attached to the silicon atoms. For example, the cross-linking of the glycidyl groups of the cage-like octakis(3-glycidyloxypropyl) silsesquioxane (GPOSS, Scheme ) using a cationic ring-opening initiator has previously yielded such a coating that is hard and highly transparent. , This coating is so abrasion resistant that no wear tracks are visible on it after abrasion for tens of times with steel wool under an average pressure of 13 kPa, in contrast with the deep abrasion tracks created in wholly organic polymer coatings after a single abrasion stroke .…”

“…Fluorescent hybrid materials, which combine the advantages of both organic and inorganic material, have become one of the most popular star materials in modern society due to their potential applications in many fields such as sensor technology [ 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 ], photoelectric device [ 7 , 8 , 9 , 10 , 11 , 12 ], biomedicine [ 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 ], and environmental sciences [ 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 ]. However, the demand for high-performance and multifunctional fluorescent materials has increased dramatically along with the development of science and technology.…”

“…In the past decades, POSS have been used as building blocks, crosslinkers, and nanofillers to afford hybrid materials with improved stability, mechanical properties and chemical resistance [10]. POSS have great potential in various fields such as catalysis, sensing, photoelectronic, energy, and biomedicine [3,[11][12][13][14][15]. In this review, we will emphasize the most recent advances on the use of POSS in biomedicine, with particular focus on drug delivery, photodynamic therapy and bioimaging.…”
