The Role of Proteases in Determining Stomatal Development and Tuning Pore Aperture: A Review

Abstract: Plant proteases, the proteolytic enzymes that catalyze protein breakdown and recycling, play an essential role in a variety of biological processes including stomatal development and distribution, as well as, systemic stress responses. In this review, we summarize what is known about the participation of proteases in both stomatal organogenesis and on the stomatal pore aperture tuning, with particular emphasis on their involvement in numerous signaling pathways triggered by abiotic and biotic stressors. There … Show more

“…Plant peptides have emerged as key regulators of stress responses and tolerance [ 56 , 57 ], with a subtilisin-like protease, phytaspase 2, generating the peptide hormone phytosulfokine that regulates drought-induced flower drop in tomato plants [ 28 ]. The phytaspase 2 coding gene, Solyc04g078740, segregating for an SNP in the RIL population, was found as a candidate gene (and at the QTL peak) for both FlN_C_4 and FlN_WD_4.1 ( Table 2 and Table S5 ).…”

“…Interestingly, transcripts encoding proteins acting on CW polysaccharides and proteases which were well-represented in this set of candidates were down-regulated in Hern. Proteases play roles in the generation of signals involved in plant development, in the maturation of proteins and in protein turnover [ 73 , 74 ]. These processes which are still poorly understood could be important in the phenotypic differentiation of Hern floral stems at 15 °C.…”

“…Drought is an environmental stress that can negatively impact plant productivity and crop yields ( Gupta et al, 2020 ). Several classes of proteases are involved in the acclimation of plants to drought (reviewed by Vaseva et al, 2011 ; Fanourakis et al, 2020 ). For example, the senescence-associated subtilisin protease (SASP) is a key regulator in abscisic acid (ABA) signaling and drought tolerance ( Acharya et al, 2013 ; Wang et al, 2018b ).…”
