The Role of Pumilio RNA Binding Protein in Plants

Abstract: Eukaryotic organisms have a posttranscriptional/translational regulation system for the control of translational efficiency. RNA binding proteins (RBPs) have been known to control target genes. One type of protein, Pumilio (Pum)/Puf family RNA binding proteins, show a specific binding of 3′ untranslational region (3′ UTR) of target mRNA and function as a post-transcriptional/translational regulator in eukaryotic cells. Plant Pum protein is involved in development and biotic/abiotic stresses. Interestingly, Ara… Show more

“…Members of this gene family are mostly related to plants response to stress, biotic as well as abiotic stress. In biotic stress expression of Pum genes is related to plants immunity (Huh, 2021) and synthesis of antibacterial peptides (Gerber et al, 2006). Expression of Pum genes is also changed under salt, cold or drought stress and upregulated expression of these genes can enhance heat stress tolerance (Nyiko et al, 2019).…”

“…Protein interactions in general, and those of PUF (Pumilio and FBF) family members in particular, can be organism‐, transcript‐, tissue‐, and even condition‐specific (Marrero et al , 2011 ). Pumilio was discovered over 20 years ago to serve crucial roles in germline stem cell maintenance and embryogenesis in Drosophila and C. elegans (Wickens et al , 2002 ), and studies of its targets reveal it to be involved in development, host defense, and response to stressors in yeast and plants (Wickens et al , 2002 ; Miles et al , 2012 ; Goldstrohm et al , 2018 ; Uyhazi et al , 2020 ; Huh, 2021 ). Almost nothing is known about Pum1 function in the mammalian brain, however, beyond embryonic neurogenesis (Zhang et al , 2017 ).…”

“…Although Pum proteins show high conservation in the Pum-HD sequence, there is a high diversity of Pum gene members in plants. For example, there are 2, 2, 2, 6, 10, and 11 Pum genes in the genome of Drosophila melanogaster , human, mouse, Saccharomyces cerevisiae , Trypanosoma cruzi , and Caenorhabditis elegans , respectively [ 8 , 11 , 23 , 24 ]. On the contrary, there are 31, 26, 28, 26, 22, and 20 Pum genes in the genome of Arabidopsis lyrata , Arabidopsis thaliana , Malus domestica , Glycine max , Oryza sativa ssp.…”
