The Role of Qualitative Research Methods in Discrete Choice Experiments

Abstract: Background. The use of qualitative research (QR) methods is recommended as good practice in discrete choice experiments (DCEs). This study investigated the use and reporting of QR to inform the design and/or interpretation of healthcare-related DCEs and explored the perceived usefulness of such methods. Methods. DCEs were identified from a systematic search of the MEDLINE database. Studies were classified by the quantity of QR reported (none, basic, or extensive). Authors (n = 91) of papers reporting the use o… Show more

“…Respondents were then asked to choose, which of the two positions on offer they would prefer (ie, will provide them with more utility), based upon the levels of attributes that make up each competing hypothetical scenario. The choice of job attributes and levels included within the DCE were developed through a rigorous process and according to best practice in DCE design, including a literature search 48,49 and qualitative work 50,51 to ensure the content was meaningful to the target group (see Table 1).…”

“…A qualitative study using focus groups (FG) with adolescents with T1D and parents of adolescents with T1D was conducted in 2018. The qualitative study is part of a larger project to develop and execute a discrete choice experiment to systematically assess patient preferences for FIs to promote improvement in adolescents' diabetes self‐care . This report conforms to the Standards for Reporting Qualitative Research …”

“…However, eliciting patient preferences for the various characteristics of health care services is not straightforward. One technique for quantifying preferences that has gained traction in investigating health care questions is discrete-choice experimentation or conjoint analysis (CA) (Reed Johnson et al 2013;Kleij et al 2017;Vass et al 2017). The CA approach, originally developed for consumer studies in marketing, is a survey method encompassing data collection and analysis.…”
