The article deals with the issue of economic growth and R&D spending in the EU-27 countries during the Covid-19 pandemic. Using time series analysis, the article examines whether the pandemic and the associated restrictive measures and bailout packages have impacted economic growth and R&D funding. To answer this research question, the development of GDP and GERD Eurostat data was taken, and the period of 2011–2021 was analysed. Besides the development of the monitored indicators (GDP, GERD, GERD as a percentage of GDP), the chain index was constructed to compare year-on-year changes and to analyse the growth rate of the indicators further. The research shows that Covid-19 impacted GDP as well as the field of R&D. Talking in absolute numbers, the impact of the pandemic can be seen in the decrease of both GDP and GERD in 2020. However, since the GDP of the EU-27 countries decrease reached 4 % in 2020 while GERD only reduced by 1 % in the same year, the overall effect on the R&D intensity was positive. However, while the GDP and GERD resumed their growth in 2021 – annual change of 8 % (GDP) and 6 % (GERD) – R&D intensity declined by 2 % compared to 2020. This decline was caused by a more significant growth of GDP than GERD in the same year. However, based on the analysis performed, it can be concluded that the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on GDP and GERD of the EU-27 countries was neither significant nor had a long-term nature.

PurposeThis study aims to study the moderating effects of private ownership and government support on the relationship between outsourcing and product innovation in entrepreneurial ventures in a transition economy.Design/methodology/approachThe data of 10,296 Vietnamese entrepreneurial ventures from the four rounds of the survey conducted by the General Statistics Office (GSO) of Vietnam to investigate the moderating effects of private ownership and government support on the association between outsourcing and entrepreneurial ventures’ product innovation performance. The Probit regression model is employed to estimate such associations.FindingsOur research uncovered that the impact of outsourcing on the likelihood of product innovation is more significant for entrepreneurial operations characterized by a substantial degree of private ownership and government backing as opposed to those without.Research limitations/implicationsThe results of our research indicated that the resource-based perspective and extended resource-based view (ERBV) are essential in examining the impact of gaining resources or skills from external sources on the growth of entrepreneurial enterprises. These ideas have significance and importance not just in industrialized economies but also in countries undergoing transition. Our findings suggest that entrepreneurial enterprises should have the ability to manage a wide range of resources and make decisions about which activities should be handled internally and which should be delegated to other parties.Practical implicationsOur findings also imply that entrepreneurial ventures should be able to control many resources and choose which tasks should be performed in-house and which should be outsourced to third parties.Originality/valueBy adopting and leveraging the resource-based view (RBV) and extended resource-based views (ERBV), our study developed a theoretical model about private ownership and government support for moderate outsourcing’s impact on entrepreneurial innovation in a transition economy.

Growing global environmental and social issues have imposed increased pressure on firms to address sustainability challenges in international markets, with a particular focus on improving their export performance. This is of significant importance for emerging market firms aiming to expand their presence in international markets, as they are compelled to bolster their environmental and social sustainability capacity to enhance their export intensity. This study delves into the relationship between corporate sustainability and export intensity through a longitudinal examination of 141 firms listed on Borsa Istanbul from 2014 to 2021. The results suggest that corporate sustainability positively influences export intensity, and this influence is further positively moderated by R&D intensity. Additionally, post-hoc analysis employing supplementary data pertaining to the environmental, social, and governance dimensions of corporate sustainability reveals that environmental performance plays a positive role in shaping export intensity, with R&D intensity positively moderating this relationship. In summary, our findings underscore that exporting firms that effectively integrate impactful R&D intensity into their international business operations are likely to harness their sustainability strategies, particularly those related to the natural environment, to achieve higher export intensity.
