The Role of Rice Hull Liquid Smoke in the Traumatic Ulcer Healing

Abstract: Objective The aim of this study was to prove the role of rice hull liquid smoke (RH-LS) on lymphocytes, macrophages, fibroblasts, interleukin 6 (IL-6), and transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) expression during traumatic ulcer healing. Materials and Methods The RH-LS was obtained from the pyrolysis process. Traumatic ulcers were made 10 mm along the labial fornix incisive inferior of Wistar rat using a round stainless-steel blade. In control group, traumatic ulcers were treated using sterile water, and meanwhi… Show more

“…LR-HS contains phenolic compounds that have anti-inflammatory effects 15 , 16 , 17 given that they down-regulate tumour necrosis factor α (TNF-α) expression 17 and have thus been proven capable of accelerating the inflammatory process. 18 Since TNF-α is a cytokine that induces the inhibitor of nuclear factor-κB (IκB) kinase (IKK) activity, the degradation of I-kB, and activates NF-kB, the down-regulation of TNF-α results in NF-kB inhibition. 15 , 16 This prompts a switch from classically-activated macrophages (M1) to alternatively-activated macrophages (M2).…”

“…The use of liquid smoke in this study was based on previous research. 11 14 Liquid smoke is obtained from rice husks through the pyrolysis process, with a combustion temperature of 400°C over 8 hours. The smoke is then condensed using a condenser, then submitted to the distillation process performed using a temperature of 120 to 150°C.…”

“…The treatment of traumatic ulcers is usually performed through the administration of antiseptics, antibiotics, and steroids. However, antibiotics and steroids that are used for a long time can cause resistance and unpleasant side effects [5,6]. This led to the use of other alternative treatments, such as the use of probiotics.…”
