The role of robotic surgery in gynecology

Abstract: Current evidence demonstrates the safety and feasibility of the robotic approach for gynecologic surgery. Experience is still in its infancy, however, and prospective trials are needed to compare the efficacy against conventional laparoscopy and to help determine not only who should be doing robotic-assisted surgery but also for which applications.

“…Through several modifications and advancements since then, robotic surgery has established itself as a valid option for patients undergoing certain surgical procedures. This first became widely adopted in the fields of urologic and gynecologic surgery, however, appropriate usage within these fields remains a hotly debated topic [2][3][4]. Since the report of the first robotic right hemicolectomy and sigmoid colectomy in 2002, the robot has established itself as an alternative approach to laparoscopy in colorectal surgery that is worth considering [2,5].…”

“…Actualmente la mayor parte de las publicaciones sobre experiencia en histerectomía laparoscópi-ca asistida por robot, es sobre la clasificada por la AAGL (American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists) como tipo IVE y III. La evidencia actual demuestra la seguridad y efectividad de la robótica en cirugía ginecológica (6,(58)(59)(60).…”

“…Since its introduction in the 1990s, robotic surgery has evolved from a novelty, with anticipated potential to overcome the limitations of endoscopic surgery, to the favored approach in several surgical disciplines such as urology [10], gynecology [11], and cardiothoracic surgery [12-16 • ]. The evolution of robotic head and neck surgery has expanded on the earlier achievements of endoscopic surgery for thyroid and parathyroid disease.…”
