The Role of Self-Efficacy in HIV Treatment Adherence: Validation of the HIV Treatment Adherence Self-Efficacy Scale (HIV-ASES)

Abstract: Adherence to HIV treatment, including adherence to antiretroviral (ART) medication regimens, is paramount in the management of HIV. Self-efficacy for treatment adherence has been identified as an important correlate of medication adherence in the treatment of HIV and other medical conditions. This paper describes the validation of the HIV Treatment Adherence Self-Efficacy Scale (HIV-ASES) with two samples of HIV+ adults on ART. Factor analyses support subscales measuring Adherence Integration (eigenvalue=6.12)… Show more

“…HIV treatment adherence self-efficacy was measured using the 12-item HIV Treatment Adherence Self-Efficacy Scale (HIV-ASES) 24 without modification. The scale has an 11-point Likert response format, with a possible range of scores from 0 ("cannot do at all") to 10 ("completely certain can do").…”

“…The psychometric properties of the instrument, including content validity, construct validity and internal consistency and stability, were established. 24 Participants were asked: "How confident are you that you can do the following?" Participants who scored 5 and higher for each of the 12 items on the HIV-ASES scale were categorised as having a high score and those who scored 4 and below, a low score.…”

“…Studies have linked self-efficacy to various health promotion behaviours such as treatment and medication adherence for HIV (Ammassari et al, 2002;Johnson et al, 2007). A limited number of studies, which are reviewed here, have begun to examine self-efficacy among TB patients.…”
