The Role of Serum Anti-Mullerian Hormone Measurement in the Diagnosis of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome

Abstract: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common endocrinological disorder in women with significant reproductive, metabolic, and psychological health implications. The lack of a specific diagnostic test poses challenges in making the diagnosis of PCOS, resulting in underdiagnosis and undertreatment. Anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) synthesized by the pre-antral and small antral ovarian follicles appears to play an important role in the pathophysiology of PCOS, and serum AMH levels are often elevated in women with PCO… Show more

“…In addition, Anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) is a unique dimeric glycoprotein and also plays an important role in the pathophysiology of PCOS. Women with PCOS are noted to have higher levels of AMH and increased levels of serum AMH correlate highly with PCOS, polycystic ovarian morphology, hyperandrogenism, and oligo/amenorrhea ( 51 , 52 ). Serum AMH has potentially important values in the diagnosis and evaluation of PCOS.…”

“…Elevated T levels have a greater correlation with increased AHM levels than other types of androgens ( 23 ). Considering the close relationship between HA and AMH, AMH is used to evaluate the degree of HA and is considered an alternative to diagnosing PCOS, although the cutoff values are inconsistent ( 24 ). Additionally, AMH has been reported to stimulate GnRH and LH release; however, how AMH modulates GnRH function remains largely unknown.…”
