The role of simulation in burns education

Abstract: Burns are devastating injuries which represent a significant global health burden. In the UK alone, it is estimated that 175 000 people suffer from burns injuries requiring hospital attention every year. The global treatment of burns can be improved through a more systematic team-based approach, which can be achieved through simulation training. Simulation has an increasingly important role in medical education, not only allowing practitioners to apply their knowledge in a controlled and safe environment, but … Show more

“…To cater to this need, learning through simulation could be suggested. Simulation is a great learning method where learners can apply their knowledge and skills in a controlled, safe environment, and it is widely used in medical education (Choong & Tan 2019;Sadideen et al 2014). In optometry, simulated learning experience is already being used, for example, in using virtual refractor (Alhazmi et al 2018;Woodman-Pieterse et al 2016).…”

“…The definition of moulage is associated with the use of special effects makeup, which simulate illness, concussions, wounds, blood, incisions, bruises, patient age, clinical features, and/or other effects to a dummy/simulator or simulated patient 6 . This addition of special effects, in simulators and/or simulated patients, provides clues that generally should not be passively provided, through the reading of the clinical case and/or the information provided by the facilitator during the pre-briefing or briefing of the scenario, which allows facilitators to bridge the gap that often occurs between a real clinical case and a simulated clinical case 7 .…”
