However, nothing was known about how exposure history, gender, age and stage at diagnosis, and other factors affected life expectancy of bladder cancer patients.The impact of these factors was now taken into consideration when determining years of potential life lost from bladder cancer death and the loss in median life expectancy at bladder cancer diagnosis. Compared with men, women lose more years of life and a greater fraction of their life expectancy to bladder cancer.OBJECTIVE• To estimate the average loss in life expectancy (LE) due to bladder cancer (BC) in men and women in the USA.PATIENTS AND METHODS• Cancer records for 51 528 patients diagnosed with BC during 1988–1997 were obtained from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database.• Potential follow‐up ranged from 10 to 20 years (median 14 years). Loss in median LE at BC diagnosis was computed as the difference between expected median survival and observed median survival.• Expected survival was calculated using two methods: method 1 used age, sex, and race‐specific LE in the general population, method 2 used the hazard of death from non‐BC causes in patients with BC (to account for past exposures and treatment‐related toxicities not present in the general population).RESULTS• During the study period, BC death occurred in 17% of men and 23% of women and non‐BC death occurred in 53% of men and 47% of women.• Using LE in the general population as the reference (method 1), loss in median LE at BC diagnosis was 3.9 years for men (33% of their potential remaining years of life) and 6.5 years for women (47% of their potential remaining years of life).• Using non‐BC‐specific hazard as the reference (method 2), loss in median LE was 2.7 years for men (26% of their potential remaining years of life) and 4.1 years for women (36% of their potential remaining years of life).CONCLUSION• Compared with men, women loose more years of life and a greater fraction of their life expectancy to BC.

Monocyte adhesion and migration to the subendothelial space represent critical steps in atherogenesis. Here, we investigated whether extracts from the aerosol of a prototypic modified risk tobacco product (pMRTP), based on heating rather than combusting tobacco, exhibited differential effects on the migratory behavior of monocytes compared with that from the reference cigarette, 3R4F. THP-1 cells, a monocytic cell line, and human coronary arterial endothelial cells (HCAECs) were used to investigate chemotaxis and transendothelial migration (TEM) of monocytes in conventional and impedance-based systems. THP-1 cells migrated through a monolayer of HCAECs in response to C-X-C motif ligand 12 (CXCL12), a chemokine involved in diverse cellular functions including chemotaxis and survival of stem cells. Treatment of THP-1 cells with extracts from 3R4F or pMRTP induced concentration-dependent increases in cytotoxicity (7-aminoactinomycin D), and inflammation (IL-8 and TNF-α). CXCL12-mediated chemotaxis and TEM were decreased in extract-treated THP-1 cells. Extracts from 3R4F were ~21 times more potent than those from pMRTP in all examined endpoints. Extracts from 3R4F and pMRTP induced concentration-dependent responses in assays of inflammation, cytotoxicity, chemotaxis, and TEM. Furthermore, our findings indicate that extracts from a pMRTP are significantly less cytotoxic and induce less inflammation than those from the reference cigarette, 3R4F.

Objective:Smoking cessation is crucial for patients with coronary heart disease (CHD), yet depression may impede cessation success. We systematically reviewed the longitudinal association between depression and subsequent smoking cessation in individuals with CHD in order to quantify this effect. Methods:Electronic databases (PsychInfo, PubMed, CINAHL) were searched for prospective studies of CHD patients which measured depression at baseline (scales, diagnostic interview or antidepressant prescription) and reported smoking continuation/cessation at follow-up. Inclusive dates were 1 st January 1990 to 22 nd May 2013. Standardized mean differences (SMD) and associated 95% confidence interval (CI) were estimated using random effects meta-analysis. Sensitivity analysis explored the impact of limiting metaanalysis to studies using different depression measures (validated scales, diagnostic interviews, antidepressant prescription), different durations of follow-up, or higher quality studies. Results:From 1451 citations retrieved, 28 relevant articles were identified. Meta-analysis of all available data from 20 unique datasets found that depressed CHD patients were significantly less likely to quit smoking at follow-up (SMD=-.39, 95% CI -.50 to -.29; I 2 =51.2%, p=.005). Estimates remained largely unchanged for each sensitivity analysis, except for two studies that used antidepressants, which showed a much larger effect (SMD=-.94, -1.38 to -.51; I 2 =57.7%, p=.124).--2 Conclusions:CHD patients with depressive symptoms are significantly less likely to quit smoking than their non-depressed counterparts. This may have implications for cardiovascular prognosis, and CHD smokers may require aggressive depression treatment to enhance their chances of quitting.Keywords: Depression; coronary heart disease; health behaviors; smoking; smoking
