The Role of the Diabetes Care and Education Specialist in the Hospital Setting

Abstract: It is the position of Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists that all inpatient interdisciplinary teams include a diabetes care and education specialist to lead or support quality improvement initiatives that affect persons hospitalized with diabetes and/or hyperglycemia. This encompasses not only patient, family, and caregiver education but also education of interdisciplinary team members and achievement of diabetes-related organizational quality metrics and performance outcomes.
