The Role of the Pharmacist in Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis

Abstract: Pre-exposure prophylaxis is a new HIV prevention method that has shown to be effective in HIV uninfected persons at very high risk of HIV infection. It involves daily use of truvada in combination with other proven methods of HIV prevention. The aim of this paper is to discuss the various roles that pharmacists play in pre-exposure prophylaxis to maximize therapy.

“…Scaling up of PrEP prescription, which is essential to end the HIV epidemic, requires interprofessional collaboration. 42,45,49,[64][65][66][67][68][69][70][71] We investigated the comprehensiveness of health professions students' education regarding PrEP, and whether education about HIV-risk and PrEP were matched with regional disparities in PrEP prescription and HIV incidence. The methodology and results are reported following published guidelines.…”

“…The strong intent, acceptability and perceived benefit of counselling patients on prophylaxis are noteworthy given the stigma associated with HIV and populations at-risk for infection (CDC, 2020). Students may also recognise the important role of pharmacists in PrEP and PEP adherence and counselling and HIV prevention at large (Matyanga, 2014;Unni et al, 2016;Broekhius et al, 2018).…”

“…Furthermore, pharmacists are highly accessible to the public as they work in community pharmacies and clinics, as well as in institutional settings. Pharmacists have played important roles in the management of HIV infection by counselling patients on appropriate medication use and the importance of medication adherence, ensuring access to medication through insurance coverage or patient assistance programmes, and monitoring patients on HIV medications for efficacy and safety, including drug interactions (Scott et al, 2010;Tseng et al, 2012;Matyanga, 2014). They also provide important drug information for healthcare providers, patients, and the public.…”

“…These pharmacies are especially important for rural populations and those who do not have access to the health system because they are found in almost any community [47]. Community pharmacies also contribute to the prevention of viral hepatitis and HIV because their services can include hepatitis A (HAV) and hepatitis B (HBV) vaccination [8], sterile syringe dispensing [9, 10], consultation about PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV prevention) [11, 12], the sale of HIV tests, and (in some cases) provision of HIV testing and consultation [13, 14].…”
