The role of topical imiquimod in melanoma cutaneous metastases: A critical review of the literature

Abstract: Despite of the emerging new systemic and local oncologic treatments (immunotherapy and checkpoint inhibitors, oncolytic viral treatments and injected immunostimulants) the management of skin melanoma metastasis can be still challenging. The main aim of this review was to assess the efficacy and the role of imiquimod in local metastatic melanoma disease. An extensive literature review was performed from September 2000 to March 2020 using PubMed, MEDLINE, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases. Selected articles… Show more

“…Since some symptoms of COVD-19 can mimic the flu-like syndrome of imiquimod [31], app-based decision-making is an important part of the treatment. In general, imiquimod mostly induces mild to moderate symptoms, but severe flu-like syndromes can occur [32]. Previous studies using the same treatment regimen (imiquimod, 5-fluorouracil, and tretinoin) on individual keratinocyte carcinomas also demonstrated that treatments induce mostly mild to moderate symptoms [33,34].…”

“…Another combination that could play a role in the treatment of VCs (in particular VPD) is represented by imiquimod plus ICIs. In selected patients, imiquimod combined with other treatments has been shown to be effective in the local control of skin metastases from melanoma [168] and breast cancer [169,170]. Finally, some reports show a benefit of imiquimod-plus-ICIs combinations in advanced melanomas [171,172].…”

“…Imiquimod has been successfully applied in the treatment of melanoma as presented in a large number of recent case reports [ 288 , 289 , 290 , 291 ]. Additionally, the topical use of imiquimod for melanoma cutaneous metastases has been well documented, concluding that it is useful in selected cases and is generally well tolerated [ 292 ].…”
