This article critically assesses the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in military operations, focusing on terrestrial warfare and outer space security. It offers four main points of discussion: 1) An evaluation of AI applications in terrestrial warfare, using real-world technologies such as Project Maven and BAE Systems’ Taranis; 2) an examination of AI’s contributions and risks in the field of cybersecurity; 3) an in-depth look at AI’s growing influence in space security, including technical aspects of systems like the U.S. Space-Based Infrared and the European Data Relay System; 4) an analysis of the ethical and policy challenges associated with AI deployment, informed by the author’s viewpoints on the necessity of international regulation. Drawing from various case studies and expert consultations, the article highlights AI’s capabilities in enhancing decision-making and operational efficiency while discussing the ethical and technical complexities it introduces. The study concludes by offering nuanced recommendations for responsibly integrating AI into military strategies and policies, especially those concerning space security. The aim is to inform and guide military professionals and policymakers by providing actionable insights for responsible decision-making in AI-augmented conflict scenarios on Earth and in space.

Acest articol evaluează în mod critic rolul transformațional al inteligenței artificiale (IA) în operațiunile militare, concentrându-se pe războiul terestru și pe securitatea spațiului cosmic. Articolul oferă patru puncte principale de discuție: 1) o evaluare a aplicațiilor IA în războiul terestru, folosind tehnologii din lumea reală, precum Project Maven și Taranis de la BAE Systems, ca exemple; 2) o examinarea contribuțiilor și riscurilor IA în domeniul securității cibernetice; 3) o privire detaliată asupra influenței crescânde a IA în domeniul securității spațiale, inclusiv aspecte tehnice ale sistemelor, precum Sistemul Infraroșu Spațial al SUA și Sistemul European de Releu de Date; 4) o analiză a provocărilor etice și de politică, asociate cu implementarea IA, informată de punctele de vedere ale autorului privind necesitatea unei reglementări internaționale. Bazându-se pe diverse studii de caz și consultări cu experți, articolul evidențiază capacitățile IA de a îmbunătăți luarea deciziilor și eficiența operațională, totodată discutând complexitățile etice și tehnice pe care le introduce. Studiul se încheie oferind recomandări nuanțate pentru integrarea responsabilă a IA în strategiile și politicile militare, în special cele referitoare la securitatea spațială. Scopul este de a informa și de a ghida profesioniștii militari și factorii de decizie, oferind informații acționabile pentru luarea de decizii responsabile în scenarii de conflict, augmentate cu IA, atât pe Pământ, cât și în spațiu.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have seen remarkable improvements in their flight capabilities and computational power. Their applications span various domains, such as agriculture, military, and communications. To improve communication quality and coverage in UAV-enabled systems, understanding effective placement techniques is crucial. While research has explored optimal UAV placement in two dimensions, there is a need for a comprehensive three-dimensional (3D) analysis, particularly for resource optimization. This article presents a systematic mapping study on 3D placement in UAV-enabled communication systems, incorporating a threat analysis for the reliability of the results. It provides valuable insights for future research on 3D placement optimization techniques, specifically examining optimization objectives, model system features, problem types, and solution strategies. Our research reveals, on one hand, an emphasis on optimizing data rate throughput, power transmission, and ground coverage, and a predominant use of large-scale fading in the air-to-ground channel model; on the other hand, heuristic algorithms prevail as the solution strategy. Moreover, we identify gaps in achieving critical objectives such as the probability of outage, deployment costs, quality of experience, and spectrum optimization. This highlights the need for further exploration in the formulation aspects of the system, which includes small-scale fading, access techniques, and interference management.
