The role of vacuolar ion channels in salt stress tolerance in the liverwort Conocephalum conicum

Abstract: Liverworts are pioneer plants that colonized lands. They had to cope with frequent sea water flooding causing salt stress. The role of vacuoles and in particular slow-activating (SV) channels in the salt stress tolerance was addressed in the present study. A patch-clamp method was used to study sodium fluxes through the tonoplast of the liverwort Conocephalum conicum. The whole-vacuole measurements carried out in a symmetrical Na + concentration allowed recording of slowly activated outward currents typical fo… Show more

“…e reduction in growth criteria due to water stress might be linked to disturbance of the water stream from root to shoot (Woodruff & Meinzer, 2011), decrease in osmotic potential of the cell sap (Ribaut & Pilet, 1991), or reduction in cell division (Bracale et al, 1997). However, plants under saline conditions can change their metabolism to overcome adverse changes in environmental conditions (Benabderrahim et al, 2020;Koselski et al, 2019).…”

“…In Arabidopsis, AtTPC1 forms the slow vacuolar (SV) channel [3]. Nevertheless, SV channels have also been characterized in non-vascular mosses and liverworts [39][40][41][42]. Marchantia polymorpha is a representative of liverworts, which are regarded as pioneer plants that colonized the land around 500 million years ago.…”

“…The change in Ca might have regulated the SV channels causing changes in Na fluxes. The variation in Ca concentration caused sodium fluxes through the tonoplast of the liverwort Conocephalum conicum(Koselski et al, 2019).…”
