The role of visual evoked potential and electroretinography in the preoperative assessment of osteo‐keratoprosthesis or osteo‐odonto‐keratoprosthesis surgery

Abstract: . Purpose:  To determine the value of electroretinography (ERG) and visual evoked potential (VEP) in predicting visual outcome in patients undergoing osteo‐keratoprosthesis (OKP) or osteo‐odonto‐keratoprosthesis (OOKP) surgery. Methods:  We performed a retrospective cohort study of 143 eyes in 101 patients who underwent OKP or OOKP surgery. The subjects underwent ERG, VEP testing or both up to 6 months prior to surgery. The ERG and VEP results were classified into four categories based on wave amplitude, laten… Show more

“…Electrophysiological tests like electroretinogram and visual-evoked potential could be beneficial in doubtful situations, but they may also not be precise in quantifying the visual potential in the presence of media opacities and bilateral blindness. 38 , 39 History of regaining vision with previous surgical procedures is a good indication of visual recovery. In general, a KPro is offered to patients with bilaterally poor vision to the degree of hand moments or light perception.…”

“…Infections (e.g., trachoma), ocular traumas (e.g., acid), and inflammatory/autoimmune eye diseases (e.g., pemphigus, keratitis, Lyell Syndrome) are common reasons which can lead to corneal scarring and later blindness . The OOKP is also indicated for patients who have lost conventional corneal allografts or in cases where the corneal allografts prognosis would be poor .…”
